Root canal
Endodontics

The soft inner tissue of the tooth, the nerve (pulp) is removed from the tooth in endodontic (or root canal) treatment. There are also small blood vessels in the tissue that supply the tooth with nutrients and oxygen. Inflammation or dying off of the tissue often causes severe pain, making root canal treatment necessary in order to prevent inflammation or damage to the jaw bone. Dental caries (decay), very deep fillings, or accidents (trauma) are typical causes of nerve damage.

The maintenance rate for root canal treated teeth is statistically very high at well over 80%.
